VERA MAY ALEXANDER (nee HICKLING) 18 October, 1910 to 1 July, 2006 On Canada Day, July 1, 2006, at Misericordia Place, Winnipeg, MB at the age of 95 years, Vera May Alexander (nee Hickling), passed away peacefully, with her loving daughter at her bedside. She is survived by Joann Alexander-Smith, her daughter of whom she was always very proud. By nephews, Richard Hickling and Ronald Ryland; and nieces, June Pratt and Tanis Briggs and existing family members, all truly adored by Vera. Vera was predeceased by her dear husband Donald Alexander; her infant granddaughter Meredith; brother Arthur Henry (Harry) Hickling; sisters, Ivy White and Phyllis Ryland; nephew and godson Dennis Ryland; and her cherished son-in-law Harry Smith. She was a longtime employee of Eaton's store, Portage Avenue, a professional sales person and subsequently a buyer for the company. She always had a ready smile and cheerful disposition, and treated people as if they were very special. Vera was an elegant lady, extremely kind and overly generous. She loved her pet dogs and those of her daughter's. Vera was born on October 18, 1910, in Loughborough, England, the daughter of Arthur and Lucy Ellen Hickling. In 1911, as a baby, she arrived in Canada and the family settled in Winnipeg. Vera was educated in Winnipeg. She enjoyed music and had a lovely soprano voice. She sang with the choir at the Point Douglas United Church. In 1932, she married Donald Alexander. The following year, she gave birth to their only daughter Joann. Family and friends were always welcome at their home, and Vera would always prepare a grand lunch for them. She endeared herself to many of Joann's friends, like Vera Gardner, who would regularly visit her at Misericordia Place. After the tears and sadness, let us rejoice that her life happened. God has gained a great soprano for the Heavenly Choir. Flowers are gratefully declined. Cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral service. Kind thoughts, and warm remembrances of Vera by those whose life she touched, would be an honourable memorial to her passing. I come to the Garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses, and the voice I hear, falling on my ear, the Son of God discloses.
