JEANNIE LAXTON (nee Laurence) 1918 - 2006 On July 1, 2006, Jeannie Laxton passed away of a stroke at the Golden Links Lodge in Winnipeg. Jean is survived by her son Jerry Lawrence (Susie) of New Westminster, BC and daughter Bonnie Barley (Jim Eldridge) of Winnipeg; grandchildren Tarra, Aaron, Jeff, Mark, Kelly, Nicole, Michelle and numerous great-grandchildren. Jean's fondest memories were of her work in the Victoria Hospital at the switchboard, followed by many years of volunteer service for which she received the J.B. Rosenfeld Community Award. Jean volunteered in the gift shop at the hospital and was also known as the Ticket Lady , often personally selling most of the tickets for various fundraisers. Jean loved to decorate her home, outside and in, for the different holidays, often proudly guiding tours of all her lights and decorations. Her motto was, if it doesn't move decorate it . For many years, Jean spent her summers at Gimli. With all her flowers, her trailer lot became the focal point of the park. She also loved football when Doug Flutie was playing, and curling, because Jerry is an avid curler. She was very proud that Jerry completed the 2006 Manitoba Marathon at the age of 68. Jean had a wide variety of tastes in music, from reggae, to jazz, blues and country. Her kids were often wakened up on Sunday mornings by the sounds of Louis Armstrong, and Fats Domino singing I found my thrill on Blueberry Hill . Jean had countless friends and was known as the hostess of many great parties. Jean was a wonderful role model for her children and grandchildren, courageously facing up to polio, cancer, a quadruple heart bypass, cancer again, and never giving up - the lady with nine lives . Thanks for years of care and caring to Dr. Brian Sharkey who was first her friend, and second her doctor, often riding his bike to check up on her at her residence and sharing the latest sports stories with her. Thanks also to the nurses and staff at Golden Links Lodge for your TLC and hot mashed potatoes. Thanks as well to her many good friends at Poseidon Central Park Lodge. Jean was predeceased by her first husband, Percy William Lucas, second husband Stanley Albert Laxton and by her son Jimmy Lucas. Mom, you will always be an inspiration to your children and grandchildren. We love you. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean's name to the Victoria Hospital Foundation. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 10, 2006 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). A private family interment will take place in St. Vital Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the Glen Lawn Reception Centre. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN LAWN FUNERAL HOME 455 LAGIMODIERE BLVD. 982-7550
