ELEANOR ELIZABETH STEPHEN Peacefully, on July 1, 2006 after a long and courageous battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Eleanor Elizabeth Stephen, widow of the late William Stephen, passed away at Deer Lodge Centre. Eleanor was born on October 9, 1923, the middle child of Frank and Edna Reith. She grew up in Norwood and attended Tache School and Norwood Collegiate. Following senior matriculation, Eleanor went on to the Angus School of Business. She began her working career at Hilton Brothers. In 1944, Eleanor joined the Canadian Women's Army Corp and was stationed in Vancouver. Upon her return to Winnipeg in 1946, Eleanor continued working at Hilton Brothers before joining BF Goodrich Canada Ltd. the following year. It would be there that Eleanor would meet her future husband Bill, and share 52 wonderful years of marriage. In 1971, Eleanor went back to work in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division. She was the school secretary at Stevenson-Britannia School for eight years, and was known by the students as Mrs. Stephenson . In 1979, Eleanor assumed the duties of administrative assistant at both Sansome Jr. High and St. James Collegiate, retiring in 1986. Eleanor was a former member of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society and an avid bridge player; playing in the same bridge club for over 40 years. She was happiest at the family cottage at Victoria Beach, watching the birds and feeding the chipmunks. She was proud of her Scottish heritage, making several trips with Bill to Scotland to visit family. She was very supportive of her family's accomplishments. She left a tremendous legacy to her children and grandchildren - the sense of duty, responsibility, fairness, and a love of history. Eleanor was predeceased by her parents, one brother Frank (1995), brother-in-law Andy Stephen (2001), sister-in-law Eileen Reith (2002) and her husband Bill in October, 2005. Eleanor will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Scotti of Morden, her son Don, daughter-in-law Cheryl, grandchildren Gordon and Alexandra all of Ottawa, brother Alex Reith of North Vancouver, sisters-in-law Mae Reith of New Westminster and Margaret Stephen of Winnipeg, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Cremation has taken place. Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 11 at 1:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. at Knox United Church, 400 Edmonton Street with Rev. David Murata officiating. The family would like to thank the staff of Deer Lodge Centre 2 West, Grace General Hospital and Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence for all their care and compassion of Eleanor over the past few months. Flowers gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Eleanor's memory to either Cancer Care Manitoba or the DuVal Foundation of Knox United Church.
