Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALAN LEWIS VICKERY Pappy Alan Lewis Vickery 89 great years after a courageous battle with cancer, Al passed away at the Grace Hospital, July 7, 2006. He was fortunate to have spent his last precious moments with family by his side. He is survived by his lovely and caring wife Janet, his only daughter Diane (Phil) and his sons; Gary, Craig (Sheila), Doug (Sue), Scott (Patti), Brett and Joey (Julia). He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He enjoyed seeing his nephew David and wife Deb Breadner as well as Fred and Bev Beckwith who visited with him recently. Al lived life to the very end; having a great childhood centering around sports, the war years, his media career and raising his large family. He grew up in the Riverview area going to Kelvin High and working traditionally at Eatons. The war years were primarily spent as a war correspondent writing for The Maple Leaf and for the Canadian Press. He continued his media career with Canadian Press covering all facets of news and sports for some 14 years. Pappy, as he was affectionately known as, branched out into television in 1960 working as News Editor and later as News Director at CJAY-TV. He later worked at KCND-TV and finished his career with CKND-TV. Pappy had worked and had strong associations with the CFL (42 yrs) and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the 5 10 Pin Bowling Association, Commissioner of Manitoba Junior Hockey, the Grey Owl and the Labatt's Brier Tankard. He was inducted into the Media Hall of Fame in 1988 and also had many other accomplishments and awards. Pappy was an all-round sports enthusiast and he especially loved his Bombers and the Toronto Blue Jays. Amongst all this activity he managed to enjoy a marriage of 57 years, celebrating his last anniversary on July 6th, with his incredible wife Janet. They raised a great family of seven children supporting them through their various sports and interests. What an incredible journey! Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 11 at 1:00 p.m. at the Army, Navy and Airforce Hall, 3584 Portage Ave.
