SHIUE-HUA (LISA) CHEN Shiue-Hua Chen, known as Lisa, passed away from complications of Pneumonia on July 8, 2006. She was born on November 2, 1918 in Tainan, Taiwan to Chen, Hu-Chi and Hsu, San of Tainan, Taiwan, the third of seven children. Following the completion of her teaching studies at Chang-Juong Girls School, she received additional instruction in music. She worked at the First kindergarten in Tainan, Taiwan, and in addition, she taught piano and organ, and served as an organist at Taipenken Church. In 1956, she moved to Kobe, Japan where she was the head teacher of the kindergarten at the Chinese church. In 1972, she moved to the United States to live with her sister Po-Kwei Tsen and the following year to Canada to live with her sister Joy Chen Izan. In 1979, she began serving as an organist at the Japanese United Church in Winnipeg. An inspiring teacher with a great devotion to her church, she would offer private organ and piano lessons for children in exchange for their attending Sunday School classes. She had a life-long interest in gardening, and was known to travel great distances to see garden shows and expositions; in addition, she had a great interest in the Arts, and was constantly scanning for cultural events in the newspaper. Believing that our society consumes too many things, when there were so many people with great need, she lived a frugal life and fostered the wise use of resources. Her interest in food, which she chewed thoughtfully and slowly, defied her small physical presence. She was a consummate organizer, known to rearrange the belongings of others when visiting their homes. She was known to think of others first, which included taking care of the children of her first sister who preceded her in death, and her friends and close knit family. Lisa Chen never married, and is survived by her sister Lan-Kwei and her brother Ching-In, both of Tainan, Taiwan, and her sister Joy Chen Izan of Winnipeg. Family and friends from Canada, the United States, and Taiwan will greatly miss her. The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at the Victoria General Hospital for their compassion and care. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. at the Thomson in the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. THOMSON IN THE PARK FUNERAL HOME AND CEMETERY 1291 MCGILLIVRAY BLVD.
