The best gifts come in small packages. or so the saying goes. In the case of Soeur Marthe Guay (Soeur St-Joseph) the saying turned out to be very true. During the course of her long life entirely dedicated to the service of others, and in spite of a frail constitution, Soeur Marthe was living proof of the incredible impact that one, diminutive, quiet and unassuming woman can have on the lives of those who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with her. Family members, former students, friends and the Sisters of the Cross all agree that here was a woman who remained true to herself and who shone, not in spectacular accomplishments but rather, in the quality of her presence to others, especially those who might have needed encouragement, understanding and support in all manner of ways. She was a true friend of children, young adults, parents, co-workers, family and Community members. No one who she knew to be in need was ever left behind. She had the gift of making one feel important and accepted at par. She felt that everyone deserved a chance. She had no time, however, for pettiness, shortsightedness and judgmental attitudes. Sister always had a mischievous glint in her eye and laughed readily. She loved dogs and birds and plants and all things and all people frail and in need of love. Her sister, Mme Yvonne Barrette, wrapped it in one phrase, She was a very good sister to me. . A sister, a friend, a living, breathing prophecy of joy, hope and communion for us all. May you rest peacefully! Les Filles de la Croix and Mme Yvonne Barrette wish to express their heartfelt appreciation to the Infirmary staff at 66 Moore and to the Home Care workers for the loving and dedicated care they provided for our Sister during her illness.
