JEAN DUNLOP HUGHES (nee COWAN) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Jean Dunlop Hughes (nee Cowan), on July 13, 2006 at the St. Boniface Hospital. Mum is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, John (Jack) Hughes, her daughters, Brenda Olcen (Robert Persaud) and Darlene Mihalchuk (Greg), granddaughters, Ainslie Mihalchuk (Jeremy Gartner), Carly Olcen, and Erinn Olcen (James Lee), great granddaughters, Taylor Olcen and Madalyn Gartner, a large extended family and many friends. She was predeceased by her parents and brothers Robert and Hugh and sister Jessie. Mum was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland on October 18, 1920 coming to Canada with her family at the age of two to settle in the Transcona area of Winnipeg. She attended high school and later completed the St. John Ambulance First Aid Course and was employed as the Rations Officer for Transcona during The Second World War. Mum and Dad met in 1946 while on vacation in Clear Lake and were married on May 14, 1947. Mum worked outside the home in various capacities, as a sales associate in a clothing store and for many years in support of the family office machines business. Mum was very active socially and devoted many years of her life to the Oddfellows and Rebekahs fraternal organization. She was a member of the Norwood Rebekah Lodge #42 and a Past President of the Rebekah Assembly of Manitoba. Lodge was an integral part of Mum's life. She made may lasting friendships and had many enjoyable times with her sisters at lodge. She was also Past President of the MB Chartered Accountants Wives Association and the Winnipeg OptiMrs Club. Mum was an avid Blue Bomber fan and had season tickets for 57 years. She and Dad were honoured by the team on the 50th anniversary of their attendance at the games. She followed their progress right until the end. But most of all, Mum enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was always there when we needed her. We will all miss her very much. The family wishes to thank the outstanding staff on 3B and 6A West at St. Boniface Hospital for their loving care. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson In The Park , 1291 McGillivray Blvd., with reception to follow.
