Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROLAND LESTER VANNAN June 28, 1927 - July 20, 2006 It is with deep sorrow that our family announces the passing of our loving husband, father and grandfather. Roland passed away peacefully on July 20, 2006, at Grace Hospital after a long and very courageous fight with his illness. Roland will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by wife Helen Vannan (Harper) (nee Lacey), his daughter Lesley Shumilak (Doug), grandchildren Alex and Zachary, his son Bradley Vannan (Dorothy), grandchildren, Kristina and Mackenzie, Helen's sons, John Harper, Bill Harper (Jamie), grandchild Wilson, daughter Peggy Harper, and numerous nieces and nephews. Roland was born in Schreiber, Ontario and as an infant moved with his family to Winnipeg. He married, raised a family and had a successful career in the insurance industry. He is predeceased by his first wife Dorothy Vannan (nee Wishart), parents George and Katherine (nee Benson), brother Harley, and his sisters Alma Whyddon, Pamela, Jenny Boles, Beth and Fae. He loved the outdoors and after his retirement Roland did some volunteer work at Fort Whyte Centre. Dad was an avid reader and was quick to share his favorite books with his children and friends. He enjoyed traveling and visiting Helen's children in the U.S.A. He was a great cook and barbequing beef and ribs was a favorite. Most of all he loved and treasured his family, his dear Helen, his daughter Lesley and his son Bradley. Roland was also blessed with all his grandchildren, and the hugs and stories he shared with them will never be forgotten. He was also a very special and dear friend to many who knew him over the years. The family extends it's sincere thanks to the fabulous staff at the Grace Hospital for their kind and professional care. Special thanks go to the staff of the 3rd and the 5th floors. Thank you for caring so much. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 27 at 1:30 p.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home 1291 McGillivray, with Reverend Eleanor Geib officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace General Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB, R3J 3M7.
