ADOLPHE (AL) WAKUN Love of Family, Loyal as Friend Peacefully, with his family in his heart, Adolphe Wakun, aged 78 years, was called to start a new chapter of everlasting life in God's kingdom. Family who has passed away: Frank and Katie Wakun (parents), Paul Wakun (brother) and Stella Warcaba (sister). Al was born in Gimli, MB on August 12, 1927, and was there when he first met the love of his life, Agnes. After a short period of courtship, they were married on November 19, 1949, where they spent 56 years of happiness and love in their time together. During that time, the newlyweds moved to Toronto, however, their strong ties to family called them back to Manitoba, where they settled in to start their own. Their first daughter, Penelope Marie (Penny) was born on December 25, 1956 and on October 2, 1961 came along Corinne Margaret (Cory). Al worked at a variety of places and eventually started at Air Canada as a finisher and worked there for 30 years. They moved to Montreal and lived there for six years where they once again moved back to be closer to all their family and friends. While at Air Canada, he was well respected and affectionately known as Papa Smurf as he always wore a red hat and a blue shop coat and received a wonderful tribute by his family, colleagues and friends when he retired on April 30, 1989. He enjoyed camping at Willow Island and at the Ponderosa , and Grey Cup parties with life-long friends where there was many hours of good times. Some of the guys would go fishing or golfing and we're not sure how many fish were caught or how many holes were parred, but they always came home laughing and joking about. In 1991 came Al's greatest title, Grandpa, when his one and only grandchild (Bradley Paul) was born. He was the proudest Grandpa. Eager to show off his grandson and first to offer to look after him even enduring many hours of reading Green Eggs and Ham over and over again, driving him to school and jockeying for position to make sure he was the first car to pick Bradley up from school everyday so his grandson wouldn't have to look for him and to find out what treats Grandpa brought him. Al was in the greatest sense a gentleman, kind, patient and loving and if you ever needed a tool, just ask Al, he would have it. Our sincerest thank you to the staff at Grace Hospital and Oakview place where your caring and friendship helped make his final days comfortable and dignified. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 26 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue with interment and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's, Heart and Stroke, Diabetes Societies or charity of your choice. CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME AND RECEPTION CENTRE 885-9715
