ARNOLD ALBERT ASKIN Peacefully, on Friday, July 28, 2006 at his residence, Arnold Albert Askin of Portage la Prairie, formerly of the Burnside District beloved husband of Frances Askin passed away at the age of 86 years. Funeral service will be held in the chapel of the Omega Funeral Home, Portage la Prairie, MB, on Wednesday, August 2 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Ross Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Arnold was born on September 21, 1919, son of Thomas and Clara Askin in Portage, MB. He was raised and received his education in the Burnside District. After completing his education, he helped out on the family farm until he went overseas in 1943 and spent the next three years serving in the army in England, Scotland, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. When he returned from the war he purchased land through the Veterans Land Act from his father, and lived at home until he met and married Frances Edwards, who was a schoolteacher at the Burnside School at the time. They worked together building their home and set of farm buildings on their land. In 1956 Arnold became a Pedigreed Seed Grower continuing until his retirement in 2003 at the age of 83 years. Arnold enjoyed being with his family and grandchildren, curling, square dancing and travelling. His most memorable trip was to Europe in 1983 to reminisce about the places where he had been during the war years. Predeceased by his parents, his son-in-law David Bayley in 2005, brother-in-law Gordon Nichol, sister-in-law Lil Askin he leaves to mourn his passing wife Frances, one son Ray (Elaine) of the Burnside district and their children, Jeffrey (fiancée Jennifer) and Lindsay, his daughter Anne Bayley of Portage and her children, Melanie and Scott. Also surviving are two brothers, Leonard (Audrey) of Portage, Ernie (Phyllis) of Bagot, three sisters, Julie (Roy) Holtom of Ottawa, Miriam Nichol of MacGregor, Mabel (George) Grant of Winnipeg and several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends.
