Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY HUNTER (nee HARTLEY) Following a courageous struggle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family, Mom passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 28, 2006. She was predeceased by her parents, Herman and Ethel and sister Velma Hartley. She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband of nearly 54 years, Allan; son Jeff (Debi); daughters, Junanne, Lori and Sandra (Keith Birley); grandsons, Brian and Adam; granddaughter Lisa; and sisters, Dolly and Audie. She also leaves her nephews, John and Eddie; and her niece Susan as well as many extended family and friends. Mom was born in Winnipeg on September 30, 1928 and lived in Weston until early adulthood. Following the tragic deaths of both her father and sister three months apart she left high school to work and help support her family. She met Dad, a pilot in the Air Force, in 1951. They married in 1952 and began their life with Dad posted to Germany and Mom remaining in Winnipeg awaiting the birth of her first child. Later Mom and son joined Dad in Germany where oldest daughter Junanne was born. The next 18 years included the birth of two more daughters as well as several postings across Canada with stops in New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario before the family came back to Manitoba in 1970. Mom was an extremely generous person who enjoyed taking care of her family, friends, neighbours and anyone else she felt she could help. Whether it was people alone at Christmas, nursing home residents in need of warm throws, or friends needing a place to stay, Mom was always ready to help. She loved to spend summers at her beloved cottage at Hillside Beach. The Dine Here, Open Kitchen sign hung as a joke by her sisters turned out to be anything but as she welcomed any and all who ventured by. Following Dad's retirement in 1993 they were able to continue with their love of travelling, which included escaping Manitoba winters. Mom also loved shopping in Grand Forks, Christmas, African violets, her precious dogs, and young children, but nothing could surpass her love for her family. Although we had to say goodbye she will remain in our hearts forever. Thanks for being such a great mom. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the WRHA Palliative Care Program and the home care staff who made it possible for Mom to stay in her own home. A special thanks to Dr. Fletcher; Mom thought the world of you. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 8 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolence at www.chapellawn.mb.ca.
