JACK ASHLEY SR. Jack was born Wednesday, March 9, 1921 in Durham, ON to Ernest and Ruth Ashley. Jack enlisted in the Army in Stratford, ON and served his country overseas in the Second World War. Jack met his future wife Blossom Nicol, who was serving in Shilo with the C.W.A.C. They were married in Brandon, MB, December 29th, 1943. On leaving the Army, they moved to The Pas where two children, Jack Jr. and Margaret, were born. He took up employment with Watts Bros., working on the ice haul. Jack started his career with the C.N.R. in 1945 as a fireman, working on the old steam engines. In 1951, Jack became a Locomotive Engineer. Retiring in 1980, his retirement did not last long, as he began working part-time with Gary Hopper at Cleanrite Cleaners. Jack loved golfing and gardening. Pa , as he was fondly known as by his family and many of his friends, loved nothing better than spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. Jack was involved in the development of the local golf course and in the construction of the new Legion, where he served two terms as President, and many terms in other positions. Jack passed away Saturday, July 22, 2006 at St. Anthony's Hospital, The Pas, aged 85 years. Jack is survived by his son Jack Jr. (Cindy); daughter Margaret (Gerry) Rock of The Pas; grandchildren, Karen (Murray) Haukaas, Kerri (Rob) Ashley, all of The Pas, Keith (Leigha) Rock of Langley, BC, Kent Rock of Toronto; great-grandchildren, Brett, Luc and Ty Haukaas, and Emma Rock; sisters-in-law, Vi Watts and Bud Isherwood; and a number of other close relatives. Jack was predeceased by his wife Blossom (April 17, 1980); his parents; brothers, Albert and Mel; sisters, Mary and Dorothy and their spouses; granddaughter Kim; and daughter-in-law Leslie. Prayers and visitation were held Tuesday, July 25, 7:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Hemauer Funeral Home, The Pas. The funeral service was held Friday, July 28, 1:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, The Pas, with James Hemauer presiding. Honor Guard: Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19, The Pas; Claude Joyal, Jim Blake, Joe Cloutier, Murray Harvey, Doug Goldstrand Sr., David Grant, Murray Cartier, Gerald Miller, Marie Ross, Gwen Miller. Urnbearer: Jack Ashley Jr. Interment took place at Lakeside Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6, or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Suite 200, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6, would be appreciated by Jack's family.
