CLARENCE JAMES BROUGHTON 1927 - 2006 Clarence Broughton succumbed after a short skirmish with cancer on Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at Grace Hospital. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Betty; children, Jeanne (Vern) Rehbein, Elizabeth Dorey, Allison (Neil) MacHutchon, and Jamie (Franca); grandchildren, Heather (Danny), Kevin (Jodie), Thomas (Heidi), Paul, Shanley, Mitchell, Nicolas and Olivia; and great-granddaughter Abigale Rose. He also leaves his sisters, Dorothy (Chuck) Dunham, Hazell Morton; brother Clifford and sister-in-law Florence Broughton. Clarence is also mourned by many nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends. Clarence (Clank) was predeceased by his parents Nelson and Emily; sister Frances; brother Morris (Bud); brother-in-law Bob and son-in-law Randy. Clarence was born in Pleasantdale, SK, the third of six children. After the Broughton family returned to Winnipeg in 1930, Clarence attended schools in St. James and one year at the University of Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Technical Training Corps (Boy Soldiers) at age 17 and was studying survey technology training when the war came to an end in 1945. He started work with the Province of Manitoba Highways Department, March 4, 1946 as a rodman and retired November 2, 1992 as Assistant Manager of the Selkirk District Office. He enjoyed his workplace and the people with whom he worked. Clarence volunteered in many capacities at the Deer Lodge Community Club and on the Community Club Council. He was a worthy opponent as a Bridge and Cribbage player and enjoyed his curling and the Goldeyes. He was often called upon to pay tribute in speech or script to many of his acquaintances and family members. He was one of the good guys. We wish to thank Grace Hospital's fourth floor staff for their many kindnesses and care, in particular the nurses and aides, Chaplain Gordon Jarvis and Marilyn Widjekop. Memorial service to be held Saturday, August 5 at 11:00 a.m. at Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Dr. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7 or Winnipeg Harvest, 1085 Winnipeg Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0S2. Keep well until further notice. Neil Bardal in charge of arrangements. 949-2200

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Although I cannot be with my family.... I wanted to express my deepest sympathy with the passing of my dear "Uncle Clanc". Growing up without a father, I will always have fond memories of my uncle, as he was one of the few men in our family. He played that role with a loving and jovial spirit. He welcomed everyone into his home and continually exhibited great wit and charm with them all. A big hug goes out to my Aunt Betty and cousins Jeanne, Liz, Allison and Jamie. - Posted by: Rae Kirkwood (Family) on: Aug 04, 2006
