LENA KOWAL Peacefully, on August 1, 2006, with her family by her side, Lena Kowal passed away at the Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 82. Mom will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her family, Chris and his wife Marianne, Gary and his wife Jo-Ann; her three beloved grandchildren, Cory and his wife Cathy, Erin, and Jesse; her great-granddaughter Amaya; brother Walter of Yorkton, SK; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lena was predeceased by her husband Michael, sister Mary, and brother Nick. Lena was born in Calder, SK on March 6, 1924 to Laura and Metro Eftoda and was raised on the family farm with sister Mary and brothers Nick and Walter. As a young woman she followed her sister Mary to Timmins, ON, where she met and married Mike Kowal in 1942. They moved back west and spent two years in Chatfield, MB and one year in Calder, SK, before moving to Winnipeg where they raised their two sons. Mom had a number of jobs over the years. She was a cook at various restaurants, including Karr's Drugstore and Picardy's and worked at the Misericordia and Grace Hospitals. She was an excellent homemaker, cook, and seamstress. Mom enjoyed many hobbies including bowling, crocheting, quilting, and was an avid gardener. She also enjoyed her trips to Mexico, Las Vegas, and Florida. Once her grandchildren arrived she happily devoted many hours babysitting and visiting with them. Lena spent the past five years at the Deer Lodge Centre where she was surrounded by loving friends and a kind and thoughtful staff. We would like to thank them for their wonderful care and friendship. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), 1101-191 Lombard Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 0X1. Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 4, 2006 at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Interment and reception will follow. Mom and Grandma, thank you for your devoted love. Love you forever. CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME AND RECEPTION CENTRE 885-9715
