ALFRED JOHN ROCHE It is with broken hearts that we announce the death of Alfred John Roche at age 56. He died on August 1, 2006 at home with family and close friends at his side. He was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer one month ago. He leaves to mourn, his wife Clarie, Elizabeth, Lincoln, Katherine, Alexander, Christine, Johanna, Tyler, Juliette, Justin. He had a love for soccer (English style) both as a coach and player. He loved to fish on the Fraser and was infamous for his smoked salmon. He was a professor of the BBQ, with a PhD in steaks, cold beer and conversation. His door was always open. His greatest passion in life, his pride and joys were his nine grandchildren; Michael, Emma, Alexa, Konrad, Isabelle, Wesley, Sophie, Evan and Kieran. A huge thank you to Alfred's family, especially his brothers and sisters who travelled from England to give him their love and support. Also his good friends who have been pillars of strength not only for him, but the rest of his family. The Roche family would also like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. James Stopforth. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 8 at 10:00 a.m. at Chilliwack Cemetaries, B.C. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I hope this is the right Alf Roche (I'm sure it is, but I apologize if it isn't.). Some of the things I'll remember about him would include: - I remember him having us do leg-raises in practice and saying, "You're like a bunch of old men!" when we groaned about it; making us laugh at the same time as inspiring us to push through the pain. Him not accepting any slacking from any of us, during practice or in a game, is definitely something I still remember about him. That kind of attitude is something that's far bigger than just soccer, and I think it served as an example for the whole team. - I remember him constantly telling me, "Don't kick with your toe!" I still chuckle thinking about that. Anyway, I could think of a few other memories of Alf (He insisted we call him that.) but I don't want to drag this on too long. Greetings to Alex (a guy no one could get the ball off of in practice) and the rest of the Roche family; and I'm sorry to hear that Alf's gone.
