MILDRED ASKEWE (nee MANSFIELD) Peacefully, on Monday August 7, 2006, Mildred, at the age of 84, passed away at the Victoria General Hospital with her loving family by her side. Mildred is survived by daughters: Nancy Rondeau (Daryl) and Maureen Griffin (Les); sons: Rob (Allison), James (Hana), and Greg (Heather); grandchildren: Darren (Quinn), Christopher, Erin, (Andrew), Bradley, Sarah, Ashlee, Lindsey, Stephanie and great-granddaughter Kaylah. She also leaves her step grandchildren, Mark (Lindsay), Tamara (Jason) and great-stepgrandson Braeden. She was predeceased by father William; mother Catherine; sisters, Hazel and Jessie, former husband Robert. Mom was born in Montreal and grew up in Greenfield Park. She joined the RCAF Women's Division in 1943, where she met and married Robert in 1947. She raised her children in Winnipeg. Mom worked in the Health care field for over 25 years, at the Princess Elizabeth, Children's hospital, and retired from the Health Sciences Centre in 1986. Mom loved to travel the World and visited places such as China, Egypt, Israel, Panama Canal, Scotland, United States and Canada. Family was most important for mom and she couldn't do enough for us. She was very supportive of her children and their spouses. She always encouraged us to do our best. She loved to attend her grandchildren's events such as birthdays, sports and school events. Mother was also a member of St Mary's Cathedral for many years and over the last 30 years was a member of the St Ingnatius Parish. She loved the fellowship after mass especially her group the Church Ladies . Mom was proud that she could live independently in her own home with pet cats Molly and Jenny and their cat friend Jaspurr. No matter how hard life got, Mom would always tell us just to say a little prayer and things would work out. And they will, for her family is her legacy and they will cherish her memory forever. Prayers and a Celebration of Mildred's life will be held on Thursday, August 10, at 7:00 p.m. at the Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 Des Meurons Street. Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 11, at 1:00 p.m. at St Ignatius Church, 255 Stafford Street, with interment to follow at Assumption Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or St Ignatius Parish. We, Mildred's family, thank the staff at the Victoria General Hospital for their excellent care and compassion shown towards mom in our time of need.
