HELEN CHOLAKIS July 28, 1906 - August 9, 2006 Peacefully Mother passed away early Wednesday morning after celebrating her 100th birthday on July 28th. The Lord has taken Mother away to be with her loved ones. Mother was born in Mobile, Alabama and later her family moved to Birmingham, AL. Mother moved to Winnipeg in May of 1924 upon her marriage to Ernest Cholakis. Mother is survived by her four sons, John (Lynn), Harry (Marina), Paul (Catherine), Leo (Frances) and daughter-in-law Lillian. She is survived by her loving 17 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and her sister Aphrodite Ginakes of Minneapolis. She was predeceased by her husband Ernest Cholakis and son Chris Cholakis, mother Diavo Vasiliou, father John Papageorge, siblings Ioanna Christakos, Stama Despinakes and Andrew Papageorge. Mother was continually active in the community. She was president of the St. Boniface Ladies Kiwanis Club, a life member of the American Woman's Club, president of the Ladies Philoptochos Society, Choir Director at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Director for youth dancing at the church and contributed to Folklorama for more than 25 years. The church and her family were the cornerstones of her life. Mother encouraged and supported her five boys in all the activities they undertook as youth, instilling confidence and spirit they carried over into their adult life. Mother we are going to miss your loving presence immensely. We held dear your warm smile, gentleness and zest for life. You deserved all the love you received from Dad and the five boys. We were fortunate to have such magnificent parents. We will always treasure the years we had together. Prayers will take place at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church (2255 Grant Ave.) on Friday, August 11 at 7:30 p.m. with the funeral service on Saturday, August 12 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave. Pallbearers are Ernest J. Cholakis, Stephen Cholakis, Ernest C. Cholakis, Ernest P. Cholakis, Costa Cholakis, Elia Cholakis, Ernest H. Cholakis.
