DR. ANTHONY (TONY) S. VALENTINE February 4, 1928 - August 24, 2006 Peacefully, with his wife and children by his side, Tony passed away at home. Tony is survived by Mary, his loving wife of 48 years; daughters, Alison (Kelly), Pamela (Judi); sons Michael (Amy) and David; grandsons Mark, Michael Anthony, Ben, Sage and Quentin and Cousin Rosemary. Tony was born in Birmingham, England and served with the RAF during the Berlin Airlift. He attended St. John's College, Cambridge and graduated from Medical School; Guy's Hospital, London 1954. In 1956 Tony joined Her Majesty's Oversea Civil Service and was posted to Freetown, Sierra Leone, where he met Mary, his bride to be. Tony and Mary were married in 1958 and moved back to the U.K. in 1960 joining a practice in Nottingham and began raising a family. Never one to shy away from adventure Dad packed up his family and emmigrated to Canada in 1969 settling in the St. Vital area and practising out of Downtown Winnipeg. Mom and Dad worked in Gillam Hospital for four years, returning to Winnipeg in 1991, where Tony continued practising part time until retiring in 1995. During his Professional life Tony was Assistant Professor, Department of Family Medicine, University of Manitoba; Member of the Board of the Manitoba Medical Association; Member of the Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba and Past-President of the Manitoba Society for the History of Medicine. Tony was a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada, a past President (1976) of the Manitoba Chapter of the CFPC and Manitoba's Family Physician of the Year 1991. He remained active in retirement as a research volunteer with the Western Canadian Aviation Museum and editor of the 500 Wing RCAF Association newsletter The Pegboard. Tony and Mary continued to travel, regularly visiting family in Alberta and British Columbia, the U.K. and Europe. They also completed an around the world tour in 2000. Dad is fondly remembered by friends, family and colleagues for his dedication to his various interests and hobbies including completing the Manitoba Marathon three times, the first being at the age of 51; and obtaining his solo pilot's certificate. He was also a veracious reader with particularly keen interests in Medical and Military History. The family would like to express their deep appreciation and thanks to Dr. Helga Sickert, Dr. Butler and the staff at CancerCare Manitoba and Harriet and the other nurses and staff from Palliative Care with whom he had contact these past few months. The support and assistance of friends and neighbors was greatly appreciated and is acknowledged. A celebration of Tony's life will be held in the Chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Ave., Tuesday, August 29 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.
