ELSIE MAE WHEELER We rejoice the end of suffering, but grieve the loss of our mother and grandmother on August 23, 2006. Elsie was born on February 1, 1937 and was raised in Fort Frances, ON where she worked as a grocery clerk and then a telephone operator. She moved to Winnipeg in 1957 and married in 1958. In the 60s as a single Mom, she worked for the Reitman's store on North Main and rose to the position of assistant manager before leaving to help Gram run Dueck's Grocery in West Kildonan. Like her mother before her, Elsie was most happy when she was taking care of others. She loved her job at the North Main Transit Garage where she was chief cook, bottle washer, counsellor, prankster and friend. She delighted in the company of her children and their friends and, in later years, devoted herself totally to her grandchildren (her babies). Mom was fiercely loyal to her family and friends and God protect anyone who crossed them. She was an animal lover who had dogs most of her life. She loved music, dancing and a good debate. She enjoyed crafts, flower arranging, and crossword puzzles. She read the paper from cover to cover daily while keeping one eye on CNN. She showed delight so easily and hid her despair so well. Elsie was predeceased by her parents David and Rena Dueck. She will be honored forever by her daughter Cher (Pat) Hebert, son Ron Wheeler, and grandchildren, Nick (Diana) Young, Shane and Danielle Hebert. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Karen, Aunt Mary, cousins Paul, Ray and families, and friends Betty Martin and Guy Gregoire. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 31 at 11:00 a.m. at Knysh Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main St. Elsie specifically requested that in lieu of flowers, friends please donate to CancerCare Manitoba or the Winnipeg Humane Society. Family Owned and Operated KNYSH FUNERAL CHAPEL, 582-0973
