CATHERINE PHYLLIS KUMMERFIELD (nee NORMAN) July 21, 1926 - August 31, 2006 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Phyllis Kummerfield on August 31, 2006 at Concordia Hospital. Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Earle; mother Edith (Dolly); father Leslie and twin sisters, Mary and Eileen and is survived by brother Wilfred of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and sister Bernadette (Ben) of Winnipeg. Left to mourn her passing are her three children, Tom Kummerfield (Barb), Claire Walker (George) and Pam Whiklo (Les); grandchildren, Kristin Walker (Gail, Christopher, Alex), Jennifer Neilson (David), Kellie McCutcheon (Jason), Ian Whiklo and Lauren Whiklo (Neal); great-grandchildren, Mykenna, Emmy, Aubrey and Addison, as well as many nieces, nephews, close friends, her very special neighbours at the Park City Meadows and her lifelong friend Claire Stubbs of Victoria, BC whom she visited in April of this year. Mom was born in Pembrooke, ON and moved to Winnipeg as a young child. She attended school at Sir John Franklin and St. Mary's Academy. She started working at Manitoba Pool Elevator. In an era of stay at home Moms , she was a trailblazer as she took a brief hiatus to have her family and quickly resumed her career with Canada Permanent, working her way up to the position of Trust Officer, where she remained until her retirement. During their early married years, Mom and Dad lived in the Fort Rouge area on Lorette Avenue. Here they started their family, established lifelong friendships and left for Transcona with wonderful memories. In Mom's early Transcona years, she was an active member of the Transcona Golf and Curling Club and in later years, was involved with the Transcona Seniors' Association, where she enjoyed challenging some of the best to a game of bridge or crib. After the death of her husband, she renewed her love of oil and water painting and produced many lovely pieces that now adorn the walls of her children and grandchildren. Her other talents included her love of cooking, knitting and crocheting. We all marvelled at her ability to complete the toughest of cross-word puzzles. She was one smart lady . Mom was a woman of great integrity. She lived her life with honesty, determination, strength and acceptance. These attributes served her well in her later years as she bravely fought failing health, but never lost her wonderful sense of humour. She was extremely proud of her family and we could always count on her positive support and sympathetic ear. The family would like to thank the Winnipeg Fire Department and Paramedics for their prompt and wonderful care. Thanks also to Concordia Emergency and ICU staff for their compassion, care and understanding. In accordance with Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 6 at 11:00 a.m. at the Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day St. Private family interment will take place later in the day. If friends so wish, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Winnipeg Firefighters Burn Fund or the Winnipeg Humane Society. Transcona Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
