JANE MACTAVISH It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Jane MacTavish on September 1, 2006 at St. Boniface Hospital with her family by her side. Jane was born in Winnipeg at the old Grace Hospital on July 9, 1920 to Professor J.H. and Beatrice Ellis. She was raised in a loving family, the eldest of six children which included Connie, Jim, Marjorie, Hugh and Elnora. Jane attended General Steele School in Fort Garry and St. Mary's Academy. She enjoyed drama, captained the basketball team, and studied with a persistence that would characterize her life. She excelled in nurses training at the Misericordia Hospital and was awarded with the Gold Medal in Proficiency. Jane graduated in 1943 and worked in the hospital as a ward supervisor as well as a private duty nurse. As a teenager in Young Peoples Union, Jane met Jim MacTavish, another YPU regular from Westminster United. Their friendship grew into a lifelong loving relationship and they were married on February 3, 1945. Together they raised four children, Don, Rob, Alison and Libby on Riverwood Avenue. Mom ensured that the family motto Do your Best was always practiced. Jane and Jim felt blessed that they had the good fortune to raise four children in a happy time. They maintained dear friendships and shared many good memories with their neighbours. Jane later returned to work as a nursing supervisor at the St. Amant Centre until 1981. She was respected for her high standards and professional commitment. She was a strong supporter and very involved in the Misericordia Nurses Alumni. Jane and Jim travelled extensively during their retirement to the British Isles, Europe, Mexico, South East Asia and New Zealand. In the summer months, Jane and Jim spent time at their summer cottage in Sandy Hook. One of Jane's greatest pleasures and source of pride were her five grandchildren, Andrea, James, Amanda, Chris and Sarah. Mom had a special place in her heart for John Beattie, Wendy and Morgan. Her remaining years were filled with many activities and good friendships at Armadale Hollows. She was a member of the Fort Garry Historical Society, Manitoba Society of Seniors, the BP Guild and a life member of the UCW. Throughout her lifetime, Jane was guided by a morality that was rooted in a strong sense of family and unwavering faith. Jane was happiest when she could help and care for others. Her values came from her parents, Joe and Bea; her faith was centered in the United Church and was always a source of joy, love, and service. Jane is survived by her sister Connie MacDonald; brothers, Jim (Ruth) and Hugh (Marni) Ellis; sons, Don and Rob (Gwen); and daughters, Alison and Libby (Bruce). The entire family wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital (5E), especially Dr. Li. A celebration of Jane's life will be held at the Fort Garry United Church on September 7 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Fort Garry United Church Memorial Fund.
