Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWALTER HOWARD DOUGLAS CLARE September 3, 1918 - September 9, 2006 It is with sadness that the family of Walter Clare announces his passing on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at the Deer Lodge Centre. Walter leaves to mourn his wife Mary; daughter Kimberley (Kathy) and granddaughter Gina. He also is survived by his Brighton family, Vivienne, Sammy and Sharon. Walter was predeceased by his mother Olive; father Joe; and survived all of his siblings: sisters, Pearl, Dot, Dean, Helen and Blanche; and brothers, Norman and Allan. He will be missed by his numerous nieces and nephews and their families. As a young man, Walter served in the Second World War. For this service he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Following the war, Walter and his friend Elmer owned and operated a small independent taxi company in Winnipeg. After he left the taxi business he worked in construction in northern Manitoba, helping in the development of the City of Thompson. In the late 1950s, Walter was employed as a custodian for Winnipeg School Division #1 where he worked until retirement. Perhaps one of Walter's greatest passions was his interest in sports. In his youth, Walter was a speed skater, boxer and swimmer. He became a serious golf enthusiast and after retirement enjoyed a daily walk through the Assiniboine Park. Throughout his life, he championed fair play and good sportsmanship- values and goals that he instilled in others. Walter also loved music, the sounds of the Big Band era his favourite for singing and dancing. In 2003 Deer Lodge Centre became his home. In Walter's gracious, patient and charming style he adopted his new home and settled into a quieter life enjoying hours of TV sports. Walter was truly appreciative of the excellent care he received from the friendly staff at T6. His family also offers much praise to the dedicated care team. In accordance with Walter's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Friends and family are invited to a come and go' reception on Sunday, September 17 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the William Norrie Centre, 485 Selkirk Ave. Please, no flowers, though if family or friends so wish, donations can be made in Walter's name to Kidsport Manitoba, 200 Main St., Winnipeg, R3C 4M2.
