Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANTON (TONY) SCHOENFELD Peacefully on September 13, 2006, Anton (Tony) Schoenfeld, beloved husband of Katharina (Tina), passed away at Concordia Hospital, exactly one month before his 78th birthday. Besides his wife he is survived by sons Walter and Harold, grandchildren Anthony and Roberta, sister Helen (Jacob), brothers John (Anne), William (Glenys) and Ralph (Bonnie) and sisters-in-law Elizabeth, Eva and Leona, as well as many nieces and nephews. Tony was predeceased by his father Peter, mother Katharina (Funk) and brothers Peter and Henry. Tony was born on October 13, 1928 in Osterwick, Russia. He attended school in Osterwick until 1943, when the family fled first to Litzmannstadt, Poland and later to Bergstadt, Germany. When he turned 16, he had to join the army. In 1945, he was reunited with his family in Berlin. In 1947 the Schoenfeld family left for Paraguay, South America, to settle in Volendam in the village of Grunewald. In Paraguay, Tony met Katharina (Dyck) and they were married on July 25, 1953. A year later they immigrated to Canada, settling in Winnipeg. Tony began his life in Winnipeg as a carpenter and later earned a certificate in Power Engineering by attending night school classes at the Manitoba Institute of Technology. He started his new career at Concordia Hospital at the old building on De Salaberry. At the current Concordia Avenue location he became Director of Physical Plant and Maintenance and continued working there until 1990, when he retired after 25 years of service with the hospital. Tony enjoyed his time in retirement by getting together with friends for early morning coffee at Tim Horton's or Salisbury House and by caring for his grandchildren. He deeply loved his grandchildren and became a fixture in their lives. He was their biggest supporter in all school and sports activities. Tony will be remembered for his strong work ethic, resourcefulness, devotion to family, dependability, sense of humour and positive attitude toward life. He was a devout Christian and led by example. Whenever and wherever help was needed, Tony answered the call. You will always have a special place in our hearts. Thank you for the happy memories and for always being there for us. The family wishes to give a special thank you to Dr. Mohammed and the staff at Concordia Hospital for the professional care given to Tony during his final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrooke St., Winnipeg. Funeral service will be on Monday, September 18, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the North Kildonan Mennonite Church, 1131 Roch St. with interment in Elmwood Cemetery.
