RUTH CROSLAND Ruth Passed away in Victoria, B.C. on Tuesday July 11, 2006. Ruth was born in Portage la Prairie, MB, only daughter of Thomas and Mildred Crosland. She enjoyed many years as an educator in Winnipeg schools before moving to Victoria in the late 70's. Ruth obtained her BA (1957) and MA (1959) from the University of Manitoba and her Doctor of Education from the University of Toromto in 1966. Her major was Special Education and her thesis was Administrative Programming for Crippled Children in Special Schools in Canada . She acquired additional special education studies from the Universities of Minnesota, Colorado and Columbia. Many considered her career in education outstanding - as a teacher, as the first principal of Ellen Douglas School (as a pioneer and developer of educational programs for physically handicapped students). and as consultant in Special Education for the Province of Manitoba at the time programming for children with special needs was just developing. A special Service of Remembrance was held at St. Philip's Anglican Church, 2928 Eastdowne Road on Wednesday, August 9 at 11:00 a.m. with the Venerable Christopher Page officiating. A beautiful enlarged picture of the students from Ellen Douglas Surrounding Ruth was circulated at the luncheon reception following the Service. Cremation was entrusted to Royal Oak Burial Park.
