GEORGE HAROLD JOHN POROZNY, PH.D. Father Professor Adventurer It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. George Harold John Porozny after a valiant battle with cancer. George passed peacefully on September 20, 2006 at home with his four sons by his side. He is survived by Christopher (Shannon), Andre (Kim), Karim and Evarn (Terry); his grand-children, Max, Joshua, Riel, Kashel, Rhian, Jordan, Madison and Emily. George was predeceased by his father, John George Porozni and his mother, Anne Porozni (nee Svekla). George was born on the family farm in Willingdon, AB on August 27, 1930. As a graduate of the University of Alberta, George took his young family to Africa as a teacher for the Canadian International Development Agency in 1962. George eventually spent 17 years training teachers overseas in countries including Nigeria, Kenya and South Yemen. He returned to Canada in 1975, and took a position at the University of Manitoba in 1977. George retired as a full professor in the Faculty of Education and turned a lifelong passion for travel and adventure into a second career as a cruise director and, later, lecturer on board some of the largest liners in the world, including the maiden voyage of the Queen Mary 2. He is remembered as a kind, caring man who stood by his principles despite the personal cost. He will be ever in our hearts. A memorial and celebration of Georges's life will be held on Thursday, September 28, at 7:00 p.m. in St John's College Chapel, 92 Dysart Road (University of Manitoba). See you on the other side, Dad.
