MAE NICOLSON With deep sadness the family of Annie Mae Nicolson announces her peaceful passing on October 5, 2006 at St. Boniface Hospital. Mae was born in Winnipeg on May 7, 1920 to Charlie and Annie Botham. She grew up on Newton Avenue in West Kildonan. She married Gordon Nicolson in 1939 and was predeceased by him in 1962. She was also predeceased by her parents, infant son William, brother Charlie and sister Sadie Durward. Mae is survived by her children, Cameron (Wanda), Rory, Bruce (Alix), Kathy Schentag (Vince), Richard, Barbara Riess (Rob), John (Adele), Elizabeth (Barny Haines), Stewart and Colin (Wendy). Also grandchildren, Melissa Steinbach (Albert), Jenny Hill (Jason), Stephen (Corrina), Bradley, Diana McNeill (Brian), Britt, Michael, Daniel, Jack, Cassandra Toth (Colin), John, Zach, Tia, Simone and Chantelle, and great-grandchildren, Ray, Colton, Finn, Riley, Ella, Kayla, Benjamin and Sydnie. Mae is also survived by her sister-in-law Bernice Nicolson and many nieces, nephews and friends. Mae was a wonderful mother to her family and found great enjoyment in their lives. As her children grew she found employment for ten years with Cadham Laboratories. She was also a tireless volunteer in the community, working with children at the St. Amant Centre and in children's literacy programs. Other than her family, one great joy was playing Bingo, most often at Fort Rouge Legion where she enjoyed the fellowship more than the odds. Mom was a woman of great inner strength and character. She had a lively and intelligent mind and enjoyed reading on a variety of subjects, as well as letter writing, keeping contact with family and friends as far as England and New Zealand. She did not brook nonsense, and to the end remained the foundation and moral centre of her large family, which it was her amazing accomplishment to have raised into the world. Mom, we all love you so much, and we will always miss you. Funeral service and celebration of Mae's life will be held on Tuesday, October 10 at 10:00 a.m., in Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. Private interment of her ashes will take place later that day with husband Gordon at Brookside Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Respecting Mae's love of children and animals donations to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a children's charity of your choice will be much appreciated. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Mae will be very missed by Jack, Daniel, Rob and Barbara. She was a mother of 10 and yet was able to touch every child and grand child with her heart. She is an absoute hero to be able to raise 9 children on her own. I know her presence will continue to live on in all of us. She made us all better people. Now she is finally united with her beloved husband and so many years. Cheers Mae!! - Posted by: Robert Riess (Family) on: Oct 07, 2006

  • I have very fond memories of Mae Nicolson as a former mother-in-law. I always considered her a very courageous lady who raised a large family on her own after her husband passed away. Life and its problems may have put obstacles in her path at times but she continued to live in her small home and take part in the community particularly after her retirement. I very much enjoyed some of the Nicolson family gatherings at her home where there was a lot of food and fun. - Posted by: Maureen Williams (Friend) on: Oct 06, 2006
