Date of Passing: Oct 12, 2006
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNORA ELIZABETH LOYNS (MCIVOR) (nee THOMS) It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Nora Loyns, beloved wife of Harold E. Loyns, on Thursday, October 12, 2006, following a lengthy hospitalization at Riverview Health Centre. Besides her husband Harold, Nora leaves to mourn one daughter Barbara (Alan) Scott of Calgary, four grandchildren, Graeme (Heather), Susan, Megan and Kevin, and one great-grandchild Dylan, as well as her nephew Gary (Marriel) Thoms and niece Gail (Grant) Batters, also of Calgary, cousin Rodie (Evelyn) Thoms of Lancaster, England and sister-in-law Myrtle Lawson of Miami, MB. Nora was born in Letellier, MB, in 1925 and moved to Carman, MB, at an early age where she received all her schooling and graduated from Carman Collegiate. Following early employment in Carman, she entered the nursing program at Winnipeg's General Hospital (now Health Sciences Centre) followed by advanced courses at the University of Manitoba. Nora was employed at the St. James Health Centre and then began teaching the LPN course at Red River Community College, where she subsequently was promoted to head of the LPN teaching department until her retirement in 1982. She also served as president of the McKinnon Guild of the Children's Hospital and took an active interest in their Nearly New Shop. Nora was an ardent golfer and curler, spending many happy years at the Wildwood Club until, after marrying Harold, she took her golfing skills to the St. Charles Country Club where she won many honors in individual and tournament play, until the onset of Alzheimer's forced her to retire her golf clubs. Nora and Harold travelled extensively, with trips to Europe and the Caribbean, but their second home was in Palm Springs, CA, where they spent their winters for a number of years. Nora was predeceased by her parents and her brothers, James and Spencer Thoms. Her family wishes to thank the staff at Riverview, both on B1 and CD4, especially Pam Lawson and Patrice Yamada, for their years of devoted care, and a heartfelt thank you to those special friends whose loving attention enriched her declining years. Service of remembrance will be held on Monday, October 16 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7, Riverview Health Centre, 1 Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3L 9Z9 or a charity of your choice.
