EDNA EARLE HIGGINS Surrounded by her family, Edna Earle Higgins (née Fitzgerald) passed away on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 17, 2006. She was 80 years old. Edna was born in Washington, DC, met a quiet young Canadian soldier named Eric there and married him in 1949. They moved to Winnipeg with their two oldest children in 1952. At various points throughout her long life she was a telephone operator, a bookkeeper, a movie buff, a painter, a crafter, a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mom always had a unique take on life and the way the world worked, informed by a curiosity for which eclectic is a hopelessly inadequate description. She loved her coin collection and old time radio; conspiracy theories and big band music; tenors and classical history. She was a wanderer at heart. Once she'd acquired her beloved green Mazda, she explored every back road in Western Canada. She often got lost but, it never bothered her. After all, she'd say, how else can you discover the best places? Her secret joy, although she wasn't able to indulge it in her later years, was ballroom dancing. It recaptured her youth, I thinkfloating across the floor and dreaming about what might have been in another time, another place. Edna is survived by her brother Morris (Mary Kay) Fitzgerald; her son Tim (Liz) Higgins and daughters, Lucinda Bourn and Becky (Larry) Goertzen; grandchildren, Katherine (Larry) LaLonde, Matthew Bourn and Lea Bourn; Amy (Scott) Doell, Nicole (Chris) Young; and seven great-grandchildren. The family would like to extend its sincerest gratitude to the professionals in the ICU and on the 5th floor of The Victoria Hospital. Their caring attention to Mom's comfort during her final days was a true gift. A memorial service will be held in the near future. Please contact the family for details.
