IRENE NUGENT (nee BENOIT) Irene Nugent died in Toronto on October 11, 2006 at age 86 in the same way she had always lived with acceptance, courage and wisdom. Born in Dauphin, Manitoba in 1920, the second of six children of Joseph Benoit and Eva Villeneuve, she came with her family as a young girl to Winnipeg, where she excelled in school, debate, gymnastics and political activism on behalf of the nascent CCF. In 1942, she and Saskatchewan-born Robert Nugent were married by the Rev. Stanley Knowles, who had just won his first election as MP for Winnipeg North Centre. The couple lived together in Winnipeg, Quebec, Calgary and British Columbia until Robert's death in 1994. They had four daughters: Linda Borson (Cayley, AB), Diane Reno (Toronto, ON), Michele Brown (Syracuse NY) and Laura Friend (Calgary AB). Their daughters blessed them with eight grandsons: Barry, Bradley, Robert, Keith, Christopher, Matthew, Michael and Tyler. There are two great-grandsons, Ryan and Curtis. Irene was predeceased by her sister Blanche and brothers Eugene and Joseph. She is survived by sisters Eveline Badger of Winnipeg and Lucille Pepper of Centennial, Colorado. Irene loved her family unconditionally and is greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
