REX CATT Rex was born on November 4, 1922 in Treherne, MB, and passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at the Grace Hospice in Winnipeg. Rex will be greatly missed by his entire family; brother Charlie (Dorothy) of Forest, ON; sons, Greg, (Colleen) of Calgary, Barry (Carol) of Winnipeg, Charles (Jo-Anne) of Edmonton; and his daughter Rheo of Winnipeg; as well as grandchildren, Russell, Megan, Jennifer, Doug and Jaycee Lyn and first wife Jackie Myers (McGregor). He was predeceased by his father Harold, 1928; mother Sophie, 1971; sister Greta, (Hunt), 1992; wife Vi (Rabe), 1982; stepson Brian Kingdon, 1970; and daughter-in-law Grace in 1990. Dad grew up in the Lavenham and Ladysmith districts of Manitoba. In October 1942, at the tender age of 20 he answered the call of King and Country and enlisted in the army. He was severely wounded in Normandy while serving with the 2nd Division, D Company of the South Saskatchewan Regiment. Rex moved to Winnipeg in 1947, living in St. James until his passing. He spent most of his adult working life as a baker at Deer Lodge Hospital. It is at Deer Lodge where he met Vi. Rex and Vi had many friends and were known for their annual New Year's Eve parties. Dad always reminisced about staying up all night and having to go to work at 5:30 a.m. the next day. Rex was a quiet, hardworking man with a wry sense of humour. He was an avid gardener and loved nothing more than tending to his backyard vegetable and flower gardens. He loved old time music and playing cards enjoying many hands of Rummy and Thirty One over the years. He especially loved visiting his beloved sandhills and Assiniboine Valley. The Treherne and Lavenham country was always home. He leaves behind many good friends and was deeply respected and loved by his family. We will miss him. Dad was a true inspiration to his family and to everyone who met him. His kindness, good natured personality and wonderful sense of humour made him a friend to all. His lasting legacy will be his amazing sense of perseverance, courage, and above all else his tremendous sense of hope. Dad taught his family to never give up and to never give in no matter what life throws at you. We invite family and friends to join us in a celebration of Rex's life on Monday, October 23 at 10:00 a.m. in Silver Heights United Church, 199 Garrioch, (Corner of Mount Royal Rd. and Ness Ave.), with Rev. Fr. Mark Tarrant, officiating. For those who wish, parking will be available in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church parking lot located on Ness Avenue. A reception will follow. Interment will be held at 1:30 p.m in Bethel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Legion Hall in Treherne, MB. Dad received excellent care from many people over the years. The family is especially grateful to Dr. K. VanAmeyde at Health Sciences Centre as well as the extraordinary staff at Grace Hospice. We would also like to thank the staff at Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence for their kindness over the past year and Kelly and Lorna Jackson for all their wonderful support. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those who wish to do so may make a donation in Rex's memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or to the CNIB, 1080 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3G 3M3.
