PETER SMORANG July 9, 1915 October 22, 2006 It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of Peter Smorang, with his family by his side, October 22, 2006 at the Tudor House in Selkirk, MB and formerly of Libau, MB at the age of 91 years. Peter will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife Rose (Kolodiejchuk) of 57 years and his twin children Joan and Robert; three grandchildren Shelena, Ryan (Danielle) and Karen (Jeff); five great grandchildren Anthony, Michael, Mercedes, Shania and Zachary. He will be sadly missed by sisters-in-law Rose Smorang of Pine Falls and Lena Smorang of Winnipeg as well as many nieces and nephews as well as many other relatives and friends. Peter was the last survivor of a family of 8. He was predeceased by his parents Mike and Mary; two sisters Marie Quane and Jean Domanski; five brothers John, Nick, Frank, Michael and Joe and grandson Brent Smorang. Peter was born on July 9, 1915 in East Selkirk, MB, the second youngest in the family. At the age of 2 years, Peter and his family moved to a farm east of Libau where he attended school and learned the skills of farming by working on the family farm as well as neighboring farms. Once Peter completed his education he embarked on many adventures traveling around Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario working on farms and in mines, saving his earning so he could buy his own farm. In 1939 Peter purchased land on the south east corner from his parents farm where this was then to be the beginning of a lifetime of hard work and his passion for farming, raising animals, growing grain and cutting wood. Peter's determination would eventually lead to several other land purchases. This remained his home for more than 65 years. In 1949 Peter married Rose Kolodiejchuk on October 5, 1949 and would become the proud father of twins. He always encouraged strong family values, work ethics, honesty and integrity which he taught his family by example. His passion was farming but his love was for family and friends. A memorial service celebrating Peter's life will be held on Thursday, October 26 at 10:30 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk with Pastor Stan Richards officiating. Interment of ashes will take place in the Libau East Cemetery. Our family would like to express our gratitude for the kindness and many friendships Dad made at the Tudor House over the last three and a half years. Flowers are gratefully declined. If family and friends so desire, donations may be made in Peter's name to the Alzheimer Society or to a charity of your choice. A cherished smile, a heart of gold, The best father the world could hold. Never selfish, always kind, What beautiful memories you left behind. The tears in our eyes will wipe away, But the ache in our hearts will always stay. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
