IRENE REID (STRUTHERS nee BELL) November 3, 1914 - October 5, 2006 The passing of Irene Reid occurred peacefully on Thursday, October 5, 2006 at Poseidon Care Centre. She was predeceased by her first husband Erskine Struthers in 1970, by her second husband Wilson W. Reid in 2000, and by her step-daughter Shelagh Wilson in 2005. She is survived by her sister Muriel Aikenhead of Winnipeg and nephew Larry (Judy) Aikenhead of Calgary; step-children: Ruth Reid, Bob (Theresa) Reid, Bill (Pat) Reid, and Marg (Mitch) Oakes and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was born in Baldur, Manitoba to James and Ina Bell. After Normal School, she taught in Birch River, Dunrea and Glenboro, then in Winnipeg School Division No.1 at Ralph Brown, Riverview and Lord Roberts Schools. She was known as a quiet effective teacher whose gracious manner had a profound effect on so many children. Irene retired from teaching in 1974. Soon after, she married Wilson and became a welcome part of a large family. Wilson and Irene enjoyed 26 love-filled years, including many happy times in Hawaii. Irene had a lifelong love of reading and music. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and keeping journals. She never lost the ability to sing along with the popular songs of her youth. Irene enjoyed her participation in church services at Rosedale and Norwood United churches, and sang along joyfully to the hymns at Poseidon. Thank you to Judith and the other ministers for their service. Irene's beauty, grace, elegance and smile will be remembered by all who knew or met her. The family would like to thank the staff at Poseidon Care Centre, the various Home Care workers, and especially Bernice Downey, for providing such compassionate care during her last years. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Road United, 613 St. Mary's Rd. on Friday, October 27, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, R3C 4G2 or a charity of your choice.
