Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHERBERT (HERB) MAYS December 10, 1937 October 27, 2006 After a valiant battle with cancer, Herb passed away on Friday, October 27, 2006 at Riverview Health Centre. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife of 42 years, Annabelle; his sons, Marshall (Heather and step-grandson, Fraser) and Jonathan, and the members of his extended family in Eastern Canada. Herb was born in Montreal and spent his early years in Sherbrooke and Toronto. He earned his BA degree at Mount Allison University where, during the 1960s, he was a star member of the Mount Allison Hawks basketball team. He continued his studies at McMaster University completing MA and PhD degrees in history. In 1974, he began his academic career as a member of the History Department of the University of Winnipeg. Many of his students remember him as an excellent teacher and speak fondly of the stories he used to illustrate and enrich his lectures. He served the University in a number of administrative capacities, including Chair of the History Department, Director of Research Administration, Associate Vice-President (Academic), and Associate Vice-President (Student Services). Herb was a man of great honesty and integrity. One of his proudest moments occurred in the spring of 2002, when, in recognition of his dedicated service to the University of Winnipeg, he was made a Fellow of United College. Herb was a devoted family man, who shared his love of learning and enthusiasm for computer technology with his sons, took pride in family achievements, enjoyed summers at Caliper Lake and holiday celebrations. Throughout his lengthy illness, Herb's days were brightened by family and friends. He received excellent care and support from the oncology unit at the Victoria Hospital, the nurses of the palliative care program and, in his final days, the staff at Riverview 3rd Floor East Wing. The family wishes to thank everyone who visited, prayed and cared for Herb throughout this difficult time. A memorial service to celebrate Herb's life will be held on Sunday, November 5 at 1:00 p.m. in Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the History Department Scholarship Fund, University of Winnipeg. An honest man's the noblest work of God (Alexander Pope). THOMSON IN THE PARK Funeral Home Cemetery 1291 McGillivray Blvd. 925-1120 www.thomsoninthepark.com
