EDWIN (ED) (SWEDE) CARLSON Peacefully, with family at his side on Friday, October 27, 2006 at the Portage General Hospital, Edwin Ed Swede Carlson beloved husband of Melrose, passed away at the age of 80 years. Ed is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Melrose; his son Donald (LouAnn) Carlson, grandchildren Kevin and Brian, daughter Arlene Carlson (Wally Read) and grandson Andrew, daughter Carol Rand (Paul) and grandsons Devin and Marvin, great-grandchildren Shane and Brendan, daughter Karen Carlson, daughter Judy and granddaughter Elizabeth, daughter Charene Carlson and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Andrew and Helga, his son Andrew Allen and brothers Andy and Clarence, sisters, Agnes, Eileen and Emma. Edwin was born June 1, 1926 in Menisino, MB. He received his education in the small one-room schoolhouse there. As a young man he cut pulpwood and worked for the CNR. He was a musician, playing guitar in a band called the Timber Terrors at dances and weddings in southeast Manitoba. In early 1945 he volunteered for the Canadian Army. He was employed in the regimental police until his discharge in 1946. He joined the RCAF (later the Canadian Forces) in 1953 as an aircraft technician serving a total of 25 years until his retirement in 1976. He enjoyed the company of his service comrades and served on the entertainment committee at the Club . Ed and Mel were married July 25, 1952 at Sault Ste. Marie when he worked for the Algoma Railway. After he joined the RCAF Mel followed him to various postings in Canada and overseas to 4 Wing Baden-Baden, Germany. Along the way they acquired seven children: two boys and five girls. After his military retirement in 1976 Ed worked at various jobs, cleaning buildings and as an agent for the Winnipeg Tribune until its demise. He finished his employment career as a security guard at McCains. Swede was an outdoorsman. Some of his best times were spent hunting in the Piney-Menisino area with his buddies. He camped and enjoyed fishing and his boat at Sportsman's Corner. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 1 at 1:00 p.m. in Portage at the Omega Funeral Chapel with Rev. R. Willms presiding. Interment will be at Oakville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association, or the Lung Association. The Omega Funeral Home, Portage la Prairie, MB, in care of arrangements.
