SOPHIE WANDA AUGUST (nee MACZUGA) Heaven is a nice place. (Jordan) Sophie Wanda August (nee Maczuga) returned to her heavenly home on Wednesday, November 1, 2006, on All Saints Day. She was predeceased by her loving husband Archie; her parents, Anna and Kazimiersz; brothers, Paul, Joe, Ted; sisters, Mary, Katie, Mira, and Tessie; two special grandchildren, Jamie August (1991) and Randy Valois (1972). Mom is survived by sister Stella Rusywich; and sister-in-law Anna Maczuga. Five children, Annabelle August, Ken (Barb), Ted (Dawn) Wanda Brockie, and Sandra Valois. Her precious ones, 18 grandchildren; Bill, Frank, Rod, Howie, Bill, Scott, Kathie, Jodi, Bonnie, Pam, Jan, Tammy, Melissa, Andrea, Jeff, Gerry, Leanne, Cori-Lee; and special family members Gerald, Kelly, and Missy. Forty-six great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and two new expected arrivals in January. Sophie was born in 1913 in Dobrynia, Poland; came to Canada with her family in 1929, settled in Vassar, MB. She married Archie in 1932 and lived on the homestead near Homewood until their move to Carman. (1954/1973.) We attribute her longevity to her generosity in lifes' works. She was an avid curler, taught 4H sewing, won awards from the Carman Horticultural Society for her flower/vegetable gardens. She proudly belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion and the Catholic Women's League for over 50 years. She served on the executive and convened fall dinners, weddings, and funerals. After her move to Winnipeg (1973), her volunteer commitment led her to St. Amant Centre, McConnell Irish Dancers, and Red River Clogging. Rotary Villa and Richmond Gardens witnessed her creativity at special occasions; the halls adorned at Christmas time. Her greatest accomplishments were exhibited in love of family and her faith life. In folded hands, she held her rosary often saying. One day at a time Sweet Jesus. In her final moments, she embraced a life that God had so generously given her. Thank you Dr. Sharkey for tenderness in continuous care, Dr. Kalicinski, for gentleness, Victoria Hospital (MRU Unit 2001), Father Phil Daley for his compassionate visits and especially to the St. Norbert Personal Care Home for two years of loving care and friendship. Prayers will be held at Mary Mother of the Church Parish, 85 Kirkbridge Drive, on Monday, November 6 at 8:15 p.m. and funeral mass at the same location on Tuesday, November 7, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sophie's memory to St. Amant Centre or a donation to the Christmas Cheer Board, as Grandma's greatest pleasure was to share a turkey dinner with others.
