EDWARD G. CHORNOUS, Q.C. Ed passed away early Sunday morning, November 5, 2006. Born May 16, 1931, he is pre-deceased by his brother William, mother Maria and father Daniel. Ed grew up in Winnipeg's north end, graduating from Isaac Newton High School. After earning a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba (United College) in 1953, he set on his life's work in law, receiving an LL.B. from the University of Manitoba in 1957 and his call to the Manitoba Bar later that year. Ed's entire career was spent in the practise of predominantly commercial law at Bowles, Pybus, Gallagher, Chornous and its antecedent and successor firms. His skill and decency in the practice were recognized in 1983 with the honour of the Queen's Counsel designation. Ed enjoyed a rich and rounded life. He built a successful career, but he defined himself by his love for his family. He married Margaret Macdonald, a union that entered its 51st year this summer, and was father to three children: Bill, Dan and Patti. A generation later, Ed and Peg were blessed with seven grandchildren: Bill and his wife Silvana's children Riley and Caitlin, Dan and wife Brenda's children, Oliver and Abby, and Patti and husband Ken Thorlakson's children, Willie, Gwyneth and Gareth. Ed led his family by example, demonstrating the virtues of education and hard work, but also the importance of balance and good fun. He was active in the community. When his boys were young, he was a Cub leader. Ed served as an Aide de Camp to Lieutenant-Governor Richard S. Bowles between 1965 and 1970. In later years, even as his own health became a constant challenge, he volunteered his time to Cancer Care Manitoba, both as a driver and as a mentor for those coping with the obstacles that he continued to face. Ed was also well travelled, an avid gardener, a voracious reader and a life-long baseball fan. A memorial service for Ed will be held on Friday, November 10 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivary Blvd. in Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations to Cancer Care Manitoba Foundation (675 McDermott Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E 0V9) would be appreciated. Ed's family would like to thank the healthcare workers at Cancer Care and the staff at the Riverview Hospital Palliative Care Unit for their kindness and support. Carolyn and I will surely miss you Mr C. I'm going to miss your teasing about the "pink tickets" (more commonly known as red cards) I received, on occassion, during my competitive soccer playing days. I always looked forward to sharing time together, as I always walked away having had a good chuckle. Your friendship, spirit and kindness will be missed, but never forgotten. - Posted by: Martyn Daly (Friend) on: Nov 10, 2006
