PETER SAWATSKY Peacefully passed away at the age of 80 years after a one year battle with cancer, on Monday, November 6, 2006 at the Grace Hospital, beloved husband of Elfriede. Besides his wife, he is survived by daughter Jacquie Mace and grandson Jason of Sydney Australia; son Warren (Carine) and grandchildren Melanie and Kevin of Winnipeg; sister Hilda (John) Issac, brother Ernie (Rita) of Chilliwack BC, sister Helen (George) Wiebe of Winnipeg. Brother-in-law Ray Landin of Edmonton, AB. 3 step-brothers, Henry (Irene), Art (Irene), Wally (Erica) Dyck of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by brother John (Mary) and sister Lillian Landin. Peter was born in Arnaud, MB on August 31, 1926 and grew up on the family farm. In 1944 he trained in the army at camp Shilo, fortunately the war ended before he was sent overseas. Peter always did well in school and studied to become a teacher. He loved teaching and interacting with kids and taught at various schools in Southern Manitoba. In 1966 he moved from Grunthal to Winnipeg and taught in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division until his retirement in 1984. He loved Math and Science and was often asked to judge science fairs even after his retirement. He was recognized everywhere he went and constantly approached by former students who never forgot the impression he left and the impact he had on their lives. His grand-children meant the world to him. He loved reading Tom Sawyer to them and telling them many stories of his child-hood days. He was always interested in their education and proud of their achievements. Peter was an avid sports fan and passionate about baseball, playing as back-catcher and later coaching for many years in Grunthal. He loved to golf and curl until his recent illness. He liked to stay close to his family, taking trips to Australia to visit his daughter and also went to Switzerland for his son's wedding. Informal Viewing will take place at Friends Funeral Service on Thursday, November 9, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, November 10, at 2:00 p.m. at Elim Mennonite Church in Grunthal, MB, interment to follow. FRIENDS FUNERAL SERVICE in care of arrangements, 339-5555
