METRO ZAZELENCHUK 1914 - 2006 Quietly on November 5, 2006 Metro Zazelenchuk left this earth. Born on the family homestead in rural Saskatchewan, the eldest of 10 children, Metro's education was interrupted in his early teens by the need to assist in the support of his little brothers and sisters. For 15 years Metro helped his father farm the family farm during the summer and then rode a freight train to Northern Ontario, where he spent the winters in a logging camp. In 1946, Metro met the love of his life, Lily Michaluk; they were married two years later and their only child Gene was born two years after that. In 1956, Metro left farming and moved to Winnipeg. He resumed his education at night school and became a precision tool and die maker. After establishing his vocation, Metro continued his evening studies and became a cantor in the Ukrainian Orthodox Faith. He served as a cantor in various Ukrainian Orthodox churches on a part time and full time basis for 30 years. Metro remained active into his late 80's when the stresses of a hard life caught up with him. After his wife and family, Metro's great loves were the Ukrainian Orthodox faith and the vast western Canadian prairie, where he was born, raised and farmed. In accordance with Metro's wishes, a private ceremony was held on Friday, November 10. Special thanks to Father Skrumeda and Bill Drewniak. We will never forget you or stop loving you, Lily, Kalyna, Maria and Gene.
