PHYLLIS MAY EDWARDS (HAMMERSELY) March 8, 1915 - November 5, 2006 Surrounded by her family from Winnipeg, Phyllis May Edwards peacefully passed away at the age of 91 years. She is survived by her sons Dave (Doreen), Cliff (Esther) and daughter Lois (Geb); grandchildren, Karen, Brenda, Pam and Greg, Steve, Gail, Brian, Maryann and Chris; five great-grandchildren, Sean, Caitilin, Colleen, Cameron and Amanda. She was predeceased by her parents, Forrest and May Hammersley; brothers, Forrest, Edwin (Teddy) and Jimmy Hammersley; daughter-in-law Shirley Edwards and son-in-law Alex Sanderson. Mom was born in Winnipeg and was raised on William Avenue. She made many lifelong friends in her childhood and kept in touch with many of them her whole life. She raised her own family on Ingersoll Street. Many happy memories were made there of greeting children in costume on Halloween, going door to door on New Year's Eve and many dinner parties and games of Keno and Canasta in their busy home. Her young family would often spend summer holidays at St. Malo beach and travelling to California and other areas of the United States. Phyllis loved to bake, crochet, travel and to work on her crossword puzzles. She was a hands-on Grandma taking grandchildren shopping, going to the movies, the theater and even ballet. She loved to go to her son Dave's cottage in Ponemah where she could read all her romance and mystery novels, walk along the dike every morning with her tea cup stopping at all the benches and friends she knew along the way. Mom enjoyed travelling to England and to visit her relations there, she went several times a year on extended visits to her other two children and their families in Vancouver and Langley . Phyllis's first job was working at the Kenrica hotel in Kenora and then after her children were grown she worked for Eatons and finally the Unemployment Agency and the Federal Government. In her retirement she found the time to enjoy her senior years with the MSOS and would play Bells and sing in the Smith Street Choir. The family wishes to thank the Lions Manor Personal Care Centre staff and nurses especially on the fourth floor for their compassionate care of Mom. They were part of her family as she lived there for five years and their love for her showed in the care she received and in the many stories they have shared. Mom always joked about how she never got the chance to go to University, so very early she made the decision to donate her body to Science in the advancement of medicine through the anatomical studies. A private family memorial service will take place at a later date. The Lions Manor will have a memorial service for Phyllis and others who have recently passed away, on Friday, November 24 at 10:00 a.m.
