CAROLYN FRANCES (BRISTER) GODARD Carol, aged 95 years, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2006. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew her. Closest to her was daughter Judy Rekrutiak. Carol is also survived by son Don Brister, Judy's husband Ken and their sons, Mike and his family, Rob and Chris, Don's wife Jan and his children, Cheryl and Steven along with many relatives throughout North America. Carol (nee McCuaig) was born July 29, 1911 and raised in the farming community of Medora, MB. At age 15, she and sister Ellen moved to Winnipeg where they attended Wesley College and Teacher's College. Carol taught elementary school in Manitoba for 33 years beginning in one room schools before moving to Starbuck where she married Edgar Brister in 1941. They moved to Winnipeg to pursue careers in teaching/education and raise two children. Edgar died of cancer in 1961 at age 50. After his death, Carol upgraded her teaching certificate at the University of Manitoba while continuing to teach full time and raise her children. She was recognized many times for her innovative teaching methods. In 1976, Carol moved to Tsawwassen, BC becoming an active member of the community in church, curling, bowling and bridge activities. In 1990 at the age of 80 she married Dr. Hugh Godard (deceased 2005). They were an adventurous couple, travelling throughout Canada and abroad. They were an inspiration to all who knew them. Carol approached life with a real can do attitude and the notion of making the best of what you've got . She embraced all of society's changes with an open mind. Carol combined intelligence, a quick wit and compassion with elegance and style in a very modest and unassuming way. We were blessed to have had Carol completely with us for 95 years and the memories of her will stay in our hearts forever. Memorial services will be held November 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the Boal Chapel at 1505 Lillooet Rd. North Vancouver. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Carol Godard to Preventing Homelessness, United Way of the Lower Mainland 4543 Canada Way, Burnaby, BC, V5G 4T4 phone (604)-294-8929.
