GERTRUDE (GERTIE) PEARL FIRTH (nee LINDSAY) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mom and Nana, Gertie Firth, on November 5, 2006, at the age of 90, with family by her side. Left to treasure her memory are her children Bob Firth and Sharon (Willard) Anderson; grandchildren, Jason (Mary) Anderson and Leanne (Jason) Smith; sister Rita and nephews, Perry and Brent (Nancy) McNaughton. Gertie was predeceased by her husband Mert Firth (1980); her parents Grace and Perry Lindsay; brothers, George, Rob, Les, and Doug; sisters, Doris and Milly; granddaughter Shauna Anderson (1971). Gertie was born on August 19, 1916 and raised on the Lindsay homestead near McCreary, Manitoba. After completing her schooling Gertie moved to Dauphin where she met her future husband, Mert, later marrying in McCreary. They opened their first restaurant, Mert's Grill in Dauphin. After their move to Winnipeg Gertie was employed by the T. Eaton Co. She later became a stay-at-home Mom. Gert and Mert started their own business in 1959 operating the YMCA Cottage Cafeteria, Canada Permanent Cafeteria and the Lakeshore Restaurant in Falcon Lake, always taking pride in providing fine service to their many customers. Gertie's family was at the centre of her heart; she always went the extra mile. She loved knitting, sewing, gardening, bowling and watching movies. Gertie served on the St. Vital Greendell Community Club Women's Auxiliary Committee. In later years Gertie received Home Care with especially devoted care from Terry, Shirley and Janice. The last three years of her life were spent at St. Norbert Personal Care Home where she said many times, The girls' are all so nice to me; they treat me with respect; I could not be in a better place. Thank you to Dr. Jonathon Werier and John Foerster for their compassionate care. Thank you to Rev. Gary Clark and to the Coutu family for their support. A memorial service, with reception to follow, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 24, in the Coutu Chapel, 680 Archibald St., with Rev. Gary Clark officiating. Flowers gratefully declined; if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3L 0K6, or a charity of one's choice. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU CO. FUNERAL DIRECTORS 680 Archibald St. 253-5086
