Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryREVEREND CANON DOUGLAS GREGORY Suddenly, but peacefully on November 11, 2006 Reverend Canon Douglas Gregory was raised to eternal life at the age of 89. He joined his beloved wife Marian who predeceased him in 2001. Left to mourn his cherished memory are his sister Madeline Cousins, nephew Allen Cousins (wife Kimberley), nephew Gordon Fogg, nieces Eleanor Fogg and Naomi Scriver, and many close friends. Douglas was born on September 2, 1917 in Montreal, Quebec. He obtained his B.A. degree at St. George William University in 1942 and attended Theological College in the Diocese of Montreal. He continued his studies at the Anglican Theological College in Vancouver from 1947 to 1949 after which he was posted in Saskatoon and Watrous, Saskatchewan. In 1943 Douglas met Marian in London, Ontario. Correspondence and short visits continued until 1950 when Douglas sent Marian an engagement proposal by post. They married on August 12, 1950. During the next decade Douglas served as a Deacon in Vancouver, Rector in Tisdale Saskatchewan, a Canon missioner in Prince Albert, Director of St. Luke's Community House in Meadow Lake, Rector of St. Jude's Winnipeg and finally Rector of St. Stephen's Winnipeg in 1973. God touched both Douglas and Marian in a very special way during this ministry at St. Stephen's which continued until Douglas's retirement in 1983. During this time Douglas and Marian's involvement in Cursillo was a most enriching experience. Douglas retired in 1983 and Marian shortly behind him in 1985. Retirement! Douglas was spirited from his living room chair after two weeks to serve as the University of Manitoba Anglican student chaplain for two years. He then continued in retirement as the priest in charge of Holy Trinity, Winnipeg and Christ Church Selkirk, as a member of the order of St. Philip's, volunteered for three years with Victim Services and Age and Opportunity, and took a one year course at the university in leadership. He then moved on to being an honourary assistant at St. Philip's church and for the last decade served as honourary assistant at St. Bartholomew Church where he celebrated at the early service regularly. Douglas was an Honourary Canon of St. John's Cathedral in the Diocese of Rupert's Land. In August 2000 Douglas and Marian celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary as well as 50 years of Douglas's ministry. Douglas was an awesome example of faithfulness to his Lord and his Church. He touched us with his warmth and gentleness, wisdom and humour. Pallbearers are Allen Cousins, Ronald Storozuk, Peter Harbun, David Bettess, Gordon Mohr, Jerry Kochan. Many thanks to his friends at his eating places for friendship and fellowship. Viewing will be held at Neil Bardal Inc. chapel, 984 Portage Avenue (Aubrey Street entrance) on Monday, November 20 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held Tuesday November 21 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Bartholomew Anglican Church, 881 Autumnwood Drive, Windsor Park. A reception at the church will be followed by interment at St. John's Cathedral Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of your choice. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
