RUTH MARTENS Peacefully, after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease, Ruth Martens died in the presence of her family. We celebrate her life as she moves to another stage of mystery and renewal. She is survived by husband, Peter; son James (Bev Sawatzky and their children, Jessica, Sarah and Aaron); daughter Lynne (Abdul Samadi and their children Jade, Yazmeen and Eve); daughter Angela (Jon Goldman and their son Avery). Also, she is survived by brother John Braun (Margaret); sister-in-law Joyce Braun; sister Margaret (Walter Toews); brother George (Dell); brother Leonard (Erica) and many beloved nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by her father George, mother Agnes and brother Henry. Ruth was raised in Ste. Elizabeth, Manitoba. She taught school for one year and then worked at the Bank of Montreal in Morris and Winnipeg. In October 1958, Ruth married Peter Martens and moved to a farm near Sanford, Manitoba. Ruth was a devoted mother to her three children and developed a passion for gardening. Her love of flowers grew into a hobby of floral arranging. She would create stunning arrangements for weddings and events with her dear friend, Betty Schlichting and brother, George. Ruth was an active member of the Springstein Mennonite Church, serving as deacon, Sunday school teacher and willing worker. In the 1970s, Ruth began working at Contempo Fabrics in Winnipeg and enjoyed what this brought to her life. Ruth was a warm-hearted and generous friend. Her home was a place of hospitality where she loved to entertain with delicious food and a welcoming atmosphere. She embraced her children's choices, their friends and all those who came into her life. Her vibrancy and energy will be remembered by friends and family. Everyone at Bethania Personal Care Home will miss her bright smile. Heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Bethania.
