Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFREDERICK L. WATTERS On Tuesday, November 21, 2006 Frederick Lewis Watters passed away. He was preceded by his wife Dorothy in 1997 and leaves three children, Dorothy, Robert and Tim; daughters-in-law, Chloe and Katie; grandchildren, Nicholas, Alexander, Nichole and Chris. He also leaves his sister, Mrs. Jean Dwerryhouse of Oakville, ON. Frederick was born July 19, 1917 in Lethbridge, AB to Francis and Geraldine Watters. He was educated at St. John's Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg and joined the R.C.A.F. during the Second World War, serving in England, Scotland, Africa and Europe. Upon his return from service he enrolled at the University of Manitoba and received B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. During his 35 year career he worked principally for the Canada Department of Agriculture as a research scientist, though he spent two years working for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome, Italy. He was an Honorary Professor of the University of Manitoba, Adjunct Professor of Simon Fraser University and Visiting Professor to the University of Mexico. He published over 100 articles in scientific and industrial journals in Canada, the United States and Europe and was a fellow of the Royal Entomological Society, the Entomological Society of America and the Agricultural Institute of Canada. Much of his life's work was devoted to improving food storage in developing countries. It was his good fortune to collaborate with many fine scientists in his work with FAO and Research Canada. He spent most of his life in Winnipeg before moving to Victoria in 1985. Dad loved family and professional travel; his work took him to most of the world. In later years, he enjoyed Radar reunions and appreciated the shared stories of fellow veterans. We have great memories of camping at Rushing River and car trips to the West Coast with Ritz crackers and pink lemonade in the back seat. We loved Dad's ingenuity and inventiveness, his integrity and his appreciation of simple pleasures and time with family. He gave to his children a love of learning and reading. We remember bedside stories and his wry appreciation of life's humour. He was a gentleman with an appreciation of good manners. Fred was much loved by those who knew him and his courage and good spirits during his failing years inspired all. We would like to thank the caregivers at the Kiwanis Care Centre, North Vancouver for their support and compassion. A memorial service will be held at Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Rd., North Vancouver on Sunday, November 26 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson Society Canada.
