FLORA MCDONALD MCCALLUM April 22, 1918 - November 22, 2006 Peacefully on November 22, 2006 in her 89th year at Pembina Place Personal Care Home. Flora was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 22, 1918. She was predeceased by her parents Archibald and Mary McCallum; sister Mary Smith, and brother John McCallum. Flora will be fondly remembered by her nieces, Kathie (Winston) Smith, Donna (Jerry) Dawson, Leslie (John) Ferguson and Debbie (Barry) Hoffman and their families. Flora worked at the Hudson's Bay Company until the mid 1950's when she went to Calgary where she wrote the Civil Service Examinations. She consequently joined the External Affairs Department of the Canadian Federal Government and received her first posting to Geneva in 1958. Her exciting career included other postings in Dar es Salaam, Saigon, Tel Aviv, London, Wellington, Bonn, Brasilia, and Helsinki, in which her job description was executive secretary for the Canadian Ambassador / High Commissioner in each of these locations. Letters home would entertain family and friends with her adventures and exciting travel opportunities. Over the years she was visited often by various members of the family who were always welcomed warmly and shown the local sights and introduced to the exciting social life she led. On retirement in 1983 she chose to reside in Winnipeg to be with her sister, Mary, and her family. Over that time she became a welcome addition to our family gatherings and was also an active member at Broadway First Baptist Church. Flora also unselfishly donated her time to the Volunteer Guild of the Victoria General Hospital from 1983 to 2003 in many roles, first volunteering on the wards, expanding her duties to serve on the Executive as well as work in the Surgi-centre, and then in later years, as a member of the phoning committee. Her family would like to thank both the staff and volunteers of the Pembina Place Personal Care Home, as well as Pastor Fred Rupert for their valued support. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Volunteer Guild of the Victoria General Hospital or a Charity of your choice. A private family service will be held at a later date.
