Hibbard left this life to join his beloved wife Mary Birt MacKelvie (2001); son John Charles [Jake] (1997); parents Charles W.L. and Josephine (1973); brother James, killed in action in the Second World War (1944) and brother George of Appleton, Wisconsin (1996). Surviving are his daughter Mary Ellen Perry (Keith) of Victoria; daughter Martha Lou Brousseau (David) of Winnipeg; son James Hibbard (Jean) of Beaumont, Alberta; daughter-in-law Amy MacKelvie of Dauphin, Manitoba; eight grandchildren, Susan MacKelvie of Calgary; Ralph MacKelvie (Noreen Sim) of Calgary; Lori MacKelvie (Robb Oades) of Winnipeg; Sara Perry (Ian Kirkpatrick) of Vancouver; Lisa Perry (Devon Martin) of Victoria; Jennifer Newton (Chris); Taylor MacKelvie, Jill Skelly (nee MacKelvie) all of Beaumont, Alberta; four great-grandsons, Conor, Joel, Logan and Liam; brother Vernon of Ottawa, nephew Charles MacKelvie (Susan) of Chicago, niece Elizabeth MacKelvie of Appleton, Wisconsin and several cousins. Hibbard was born in Edmonton, Alberta on January 11, 1912. In 1925 the family moved from Edmonton to Winnipeg where Hibbard's father was manager of the Scott Fruit Company. In 1927 his father established MacKelvies Limited, Manufacturers Agents. Hibbard managed the firm until his retirement in 1985. Hibbard attended Kelvin High School where he met the love of his life, Mary Birt. Hibbard and Mary married October 3, 1934 and celebrated their 66th anniversary together in 2000. He joined the Young Men's Section of the Winnipeg Board of Trade in 1930 at the age of 18. He served as President 1945/46 and remained active with the Board for many years. He was a founding member of the Canadian Food Brokers Association. Hibbard had a lifelong passion for the game of golf starting as a caddy at Jasper National Park. In the summer of 1930 he and his father travelled to Minneapolis to see Bobby Jones play in the U.S. Open Golf Tournament. In 1946 he joined the St. Charles Country Club where he chaired the Host Committee for the 1952 Canadian Open Golf Tournament. He served as Club Captain from 1976 to 1978. He was a member of the St. Charles Centennial Historical Committee. He remained a member of the St. Charles Country Club for over 60 years, playing golf into his 80s. Hibbard enjoyed other sports and was an avid swimmer and curler at the Winnipeg Winter Club. Hibbard took a great interest in community affairs and charitable organizations and was involved with the Canadian Red Cross Society, Manitoba Section for many years. He was actively involved as a volunteer during the flood of 1950. He was a longtime member and supporter of St. Andrew's River Heights United Church. He was known for his gentlemanly ways and his willingness to help his family and friends whenever the need arose. His family meant everything to him. Hibbard had a wonderful sense of humour and loved a good joke. He and his family spent many enjoyable summers together at their cottage at Victoria Beach. Many thanks to the wonderful and caring staff of St. Norbert Nursing Home, in particular Hibbard's caregiver and friend Tony. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Elmwood Cemetery Inc., 88 Hespeler Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R2L 0L3. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrew's River Heights United Church, 255 Oak Street, Winnipeg, MB.
