HELEN STELLA REJKOWICH It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of their dearly loved sister, aunt, and friend at the Misericordia Health Centre on Wednesday, December 13, 2006. To cherish her memory, she leaves her loving sister Elsie (Jack) Stefanson and her niece Bonnie Jarco of Winnipeg, her nephew Douglas (Jan) Stefanson of Littleton, Colorado, and her niece Louise Lovas of Hillsboro, Oregon. Her grandnieces Lianne Nosyk (Bohdan) of Burnaby, BC, Jennifer Hughes (Dustin) of Winnipeg and Kirstin Lovas of Hillsboro, Oregon will also remember her lovingly. She was predeceased by her mother Aniela in 1978 and by her father Casmir in 1987. Born in Winnipeg on January 21, 1926, Helen was educated in Winnipeg Schools. A graduate of St Mary's Academy, she pursued further studies at the University of Manitoba where she achieved her B.A./54, BEd/56 and MEd/59. In 1961 she received her M.A. in French from Middlebury College in Vermont. She enjoyed her lengthy teaching career in numerous schools in Winnipeg School Division. Community involvement was an important part of Helen's life. She was a life long member of St. John Cantius Church, a former member of the church council and a long faithful lector at her church. The Catholic Women's League interested her since 1949 where she served in executive positions. She extended her service to her church as a lay Oblate of St. Benedict, maintaining ties to the Benedictine Order. She volunteered her services for many years at the library in the Canadian Polish Manor and served as a dedicated secretary of the Canadian Polish Professional Association. Her other interests included music, travel and reading. Family and friends will recall Helen's generosity, kindness and independent spirit. She took great pride and interest in the lives of her nieces, nephew and grandnieces and their achievements. Helen's life will be celebrated during Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. with visitation at 9:30 a.m. at St. John Cantius Roman Catholic Church, 846 Burrows Avenue. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Helen Rejkowich was my teacher in Grade 7 at General Wolfe School. This would have been about 1959. This was the most remarkable education year I ever had. We (my parents and I) worked till all hours of the night on homework assignments. I complained bitterly, but even during the year I recognized what a remarkable effort she was making to educate the children in her class. See second entry for remainder of what I want to say (100 words is not enough) - Posted by: Bill Singleton (Friend) on: Dec 27, 2006
