CAROL KATZ On December 16, 2006, at the age of 84, Carol passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre with family at her side. Born in Toronto she married, lived and raised her family in Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Dr. Sam Katz who died on November 26, 2005 and by her three sisters. Carol is survived by her children, Fern Hershfield (Joe) and Jack Katz (Lesly); grandchildren, Jay Hershfield (Leslie), Lauren Hershfield (Phil Moharib), Shaun Katz and Jenna Katz and by her great-grandson Nathan Hershfield. A strong driving force, Carol steered her children and grandchildren to a higher education and to professional careers with a determination and will that is best reflected by their achievements of which she was so very proud. Giving her special pleasure were her grandchildren and great-grandchild. She praised and supported them at every turn. Carol was a devoted caregiver to her husband Sam in his final years. In spite of her own health problems she never faltered in her role. Being fiercely independent she never allowed herself to be a burden even in her death. She was blessed in not having to suffer and will be remembered for her personal strength and her passion for her family's security and well-being. She will be missed and remembered with love. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at the Grace Hospital and the Health Sciences Centre for their compassion and care. Funeral services were held at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, December 20, 2006. Pallbearers were The Honourable Justice Joe E. Hershfield, Jay Hershfield, Shaun Katz, David Lewis, Moishe Lewis and Gerry Hochman. Honourary pallbearer was Phil Moharib. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of choice.
