JOHN ZOOCHKAN C.D. John passed away peacefully on December 22, 2006 at the Concordia Hospital with his family by his side. John is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Elizabeth; daughter Yvonne (Brian) Danchuk of Regina, SK, son Bill (Irene) of West St. Paul, MB and daughter Donny Zoochkan (Wayne) Wyke of East St. Paul, MB; grand-children, Matthew, Michelle and Rachel Danchuk, John and Julie Zoochkan, Darnell and Reece Wyke; sister Catherine (Ronald) Findlay of Welland, ON. He was predeceased by his parents Mary and John Zoochkan; brother P.O. William killed in the Second World War and sister Doris May. John was born in Mine Centre, ON on January 17, 1924 and later lived in Rainy River, ON. He was a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, the Ukrainian Museum of Canada and the Royal Canadian Legion Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Branch #141. He spent a total of 24 years with the R.C.A.F., serving overseas during the Second World War and the remaining years in Canada during peacetime. Upon retiring from the services, he worked for Canadian Tire Stores and later as Department Manager with Beaver Lumber Company. John was an avid lover of nature, particularly as a Bird Watcher . He spent many hours with his grandchildren at their cottage at Gull Lake. Dido would take them walking on trails and teach them to appreciate nature. He was of a loving, caring nature and took time to stop and share a smile or a story with friends, family, neighbours but especially strangers. The family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Duerksen and staff at Concordia Hospital for their compassionate care of Dad during his brief stay. Prayers will be held on Tuesday, December 26 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Funeral Rite will be held on Wednesday, December 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 1175 Main Street with Very. Rev. Henry Lakusta officiating and Mr. Bill Drewniak as cantor. Interment to follow in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Boris Beyak, Dennis Kozak, Reg Luining, Randy Meiklejohn, Gordon Roscoe and Wayne Warren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.   • Though we didn't see John very often, he will be remembered for his gentle spirit, and the twinkle in his eyes that warmed you when he smiled at you and made you feel at ease.
