MARY ALLISON DOWNIE Mary Allison Downie (nee Gemmel), widow of the late James Edward Downie, passed away on December 18, 2006, at the Riverview Health Centre. Mary is survived by a daughter, Jean (Waters) of Edmonton and a son, Bill, of Kelowna; five grandchildren, Marianne and Bob Waters, A.J., Chris and Mandy Downie; two great-granddaughters, Krista and Jaimie Logan; a sister, Margaret Gemmel of Winnipeg; and a sister-in-law Diana Gemmel of Calgary and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Jim, Mary was predeceased by four brothers, William, Francis, Harry and John Gemmel; and two sisters, Meran Grain and Elsie Gemmel; and her son-in-law John Waters. Prior to her marriage in 1943, Mary was employed by the Canadian Indemnity Company. For 29 years she was employed as the Secretary at Rosedale United Church and retired in 1987. Mary was an active member of the United Church, a member of the Church Board, the U.C.W, and she and Jim were leaders of the church young peoples' group. Mary's passion was to serve others and she did that exceptionally well. The family wants to thank all the staff at the Riverview Health Centre (D4 and B1) for the care and compassion which they gave to our mother over the past six years; and also those who continued to maintain contact and support during those challenging years; and special thanks to Gwen Krahn who was a regular and consistent support. A memorial service will be held at Churchill Park United Church on Friday, December 29 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Pat Wotton officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or the charity of one's choice.
